Welcome to the start of Seattle Herring Week, and another fantabulous MISCmedia MAIL.

WEATHER

Again, not AS hot as Tuesday, which was not AS hot as Monday.

CLIMATE

This summer's wildfire season could be parched-dry and dreadful. (KCPQ)

DEVELOPING STORIES

Capitol Hill 's hyper-gentrification spreads to the CD, as a beloved East Union Street auto shop closes. (Capitol Hill Seattle)

Can the Highway 99 Blues Club survive the waterfront's emerging post-viaduct speculators? (Danny Westneat)

Housing-density opponents assert that if rampant upzoning and mixed-use midrises aren't stopped, Seattle's neighborhoods will resemble "Eastern Europe." (The C Is For Crank)

R.I.P.

John Hathaway, a bartender, blogger, and "self appointed gadfly of Tacoma," died at age 69. He famously broke the story of Tacoma police chief David Brame's messy divorce on his blog (or "online newspaper"). The publicity ultimately led to Brame killing his wife and himself. Hathaway (always impeccably dressed in fedoras and custom tailored suits) was later a central figure in CBS News producer Paul LaRosa's book "Tacoma Confidential." (CBS)

DRUMS AND WIRES

The office of Mayor Murray (who got campaign money from Comcast, as you recall) rejected the proposal for a city-run broadband network. It would cost from $450 million to $650 million to build out and launch, according to a new feasibility study. Advocates plan to keep on plugging for it. (Slog; Seattlish)

YOU KNOW THE DRILL

In the morning, five "Raging Grannies" got arrested after they chained themselves to one another across railroad tracks near the pier where Shell's Arctic drilling platform is docked. Then in the afternoon, a Seattle Port Commission meeting "spiraled out of control" as security and protesters clashed, ending with police pushind people out of the building. (KIRO-TV; Slog

O GIVE ME A HOME...

Seattle charged 13 landlords with rental-housing discrimination on the basis of race, gender identity, sexual preference, and national origin; 12 of the property owners have settled. (KCPQ)

Tacoma's latest harass-the-homeless idea: placing strategic big rocks along a strip of lawn near the main city library, to prevent its use for sleeping on. (News Tribune)

THE PLANE TRUTH

Can jet travel be made more eco-friendly? Boeing's got a project to try to find out. (KING)

THE FRUITS OF THEIR LABORS

Apple announced some new products and services on Monday. its Beats By Dre acquisition will spawn a subscription music service and a streaming radio station (neither very new ideas). And the next Mac OS will bear the Spanish term for "The Captain" (Kirk? Nemo? Crunch?). (Mashable; CNet)

'EVER GET THE FEELING YOU'VE BEEN CHEATED?'

The UK banking arm of Richard Branson's Virgin empire is coming out with Sex Pistols LP-art credit cards. (Mashable)

TODAY IN GOD

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar blasts "prosperity gospel" preachers, calling them another front in "the war against the poor." (Time)

SPORTS

Mariners finally win one, 3-2 at Cleveland… Storm trounced by the Tulsa Shock 68-45… The NHL's Phoenix Coyotes could lose their arena lease in a Glendale, AZ city council vote set for Wednesday, just maybe-maybe setting up a potential move to Seattle.

TODAY

Labor and transit advocates will picket Amazon's shareholders meeting at the Seattle Rep Theatre. They want the e-commerce behemoth to hire a more diverse workforce, improve pay and working conditions in its warehouses, help fund Metro's low-income fare program, and get rid of a security firm accused of mistreating workers. Jesse Jackson will join them. (Transit Riders Union, SeaTimes)

TONIGHT

Substation, a new "underground" live music club, is now open in Freelard (645 NW 45th St.). (Slog)

INSIDE

Day Three of this experiment finds us with 35 subscribers. Let's see if we can get to 100 by the end of next week, eh? Tell your friends about what we're doing here each weekday morn.
